IS THE HISTORY GOING TO BE REPEATED IN TAMIL NADU?

IS THE HISTORY GOING TO BE REPEATED IN TAMIL NADU?

To outside world Tamil politics looks more impulsive and sentiment oriented. If one look into it deeply we get  totally different perspective. Tamilians are always looking  towards strong and stable leadership.

TN could see strong Congress  leadership in Rajaji(52-54), Kamaraj Nadar(54-63). Annadurai himself lost election from Kanchipuram in 1962. Once Kamaraj was replaced by Bhaktavatsalam in 1963, the downfall of Congress started in TN and in 1967 elections DMK under Anna established most popular anti Hindi Government in TN.

With demise of Anna in 1969,  M Karunanidhi was natural choice as successor CM and lead party to victory in 1971 elections. With the rise of differences between MK and MGR the party split into two and next three elections in 1977, 80, 84  was hat trick for AIADMK under MGR leadership. Though MK has better organisation and oratory skills still MGR was accepted as mass leader due to his stardom followed by his genuine love for people.

With demise of MGR in Dec ,1987 leadership crisis was felt in AIADMK and his wife was made as CM of state against popular demand for JJ. JJ was insulted in the party and perhaps gone through the bad phase and turmoil in her political carrier. Despite sympathy factor towards AIADMK, TN voted DMK back to power in 1989 after 23 years only due to the fact that they could see better leadership in DMK than in AIADMK (divided lot) . JJ took this party weakness as opportunity and clearly established as a near match to MGR in party and throw challenge to MK. In 1996 election AIADMK was quickly back to power and JJ became CM.

As both MK and JJ could emerge as very strong regional leaders and established excellent gross root level organisation, people choice was changing in alternative elections and the trend was reversed by JJ in 2016 elections by winning the second term. TN voted AIADMK to power in 1991, 2001, 2011 & 2016 and DMK in 1989, 1996, 2006.

Now with the demise of JJ there is clear vacuum in AIADMK leadership. Like in 1988 Panneerselvam took the role of janaki and sasikala the role of then JJ. Only time will tell whether these will be in a position to perform and give clear direction to the party cadre and to the state. .

As on date DMK looks strong under the leadership of Stalin. It's a real challenge for AIADMK to come out of this crisis situation and face much stronger opposition both in assembly and outside. If these are not realized and addressed the 1989 story might repeat discounting the sympathy factor too.

The first traces of corruption in TN was felt during MK rule and it was the first government in independent India dismissed on corruption charges and Sarkaria commission was appointed. AIADMK under MGR gave clean Government. After MGR era, the AIADMK politics took different direction under weak leader Janaki Ramachandran and ministers started amassing wealth. The most charismatic leader and highest paid film actress in her hay days was no exception for obvious reasons. These charges haunted Amma till recently and had great impact on health, finally leading to her premature death. The DMK corruption under MK even spread to Delhi and costed dearly to UPA II.

Let us pray that both Dravidian parties under new leadership (post JJ & MK era) come out of these black spots and give clean administration in the state and contribute positively for nation.
