Invention to convention -An essential shift in Indian Agriculture As a country, we moved from food starving to food surplus nation in about 75years. Our food grain production increased from 50 Million MT in 1951 to 308 Million MT in 2020-21, which is a considerable achievement. With food grains such as paddy and wheat, shifting from sellers’ market to buyers’ market with bumper production in subsequent years, farmers are facing problems in selling the produce, despite Minimum support price (MSP) mechanisms. In fact it is impossible for any government directly purchasing from farmers at Minimum support price (MSP) and sustain the operations.   The intention of MSP is to act as bench mark price.   While working on MSP, other than cost of production, the other factors such crop planning, value addition possibilities, export potential, cost of buffer stock management etc., shall be considered.   A page from citizen’s diary- Flood loss compensation in Krishna District Newly elected young and energetic Chief Minister Sri YS Jaganmohan Reddy brought administration to people’s doorstep by establishing village secretariat, Rythu Barosha Kendras and appointed sufficient staff, in addition to village volunteers ( one volunteer for 50 households) exclusively to ensure government programs delivery to people.   When it comes to the delivery of welfare programs such as distribution of pensions, ration etc., its working is satisfactory. IS COW ONE STOP SOLUTION FOR INDIAN AGRICULTURE? The hungama created a year back about ban on cattle sales, cattle movement and atrocities and killing of minorities and dalits indulge in cattle movement is still fresh in memory. Now another jumla like cow centric agriculture is solution for doubling farmers income by 2022 is in offing and it is likely to be announced as national program on August 15th. Natural farming may be one method, but how can GOI promote it in large scale without scientific validation? My request to Agri scientists is not to fall flat to bureaucracy and political nexus and do injustice to Indian agriculture. Please resist the move and counter it with data base. MINIMUM SUPPORT  PRICE (MSP) FOR AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE    - FEW INSIGHTS FOR TAKING APPROPRIATE DECISIONS Background: Then UPA Government under the leadership of Dr. Manmohan Singh appointed Dr. M S Swaminathan committee to look into the issues related to farmers and how to bring them out of agrarian crisis. The committee had gone into the details and recommended to revise MSP calculations considering cost of production plus 50% and protect farmer’s interests, so that farming will be a viable option with decent livelihoods. For some reasons, though the recommendations were presented and considered, could not be implemented before 2014 general elections. PADDY CULTIVATION- NECESSITY BRINGS INVENTIONS  In Delta area wet lands , one can grow annually 2 crops of paddy followed by paddy, paddy followed by maize or pulses or single crop of sugarcane. When paddy transplanting, harvesting etc were manual, some farmers were preferring cane cultivation. With change in cultivation practices and increased harvesting problems in cane, in wetlands cane cultivation almost came to an end. In krishna Delta , when the irrigation was not available on time,  farmers out of necessity moved from paddy nursery and transplanting to direct sowing method. Direct Sowing resulted in huge reduction of cost particularly manpower requirements which is scarce in present situation. Due to direct sowing and better drainage facilities, paddy yields increased by 20 to 30% ( 30 bags to 40 bags of 75 kg each).
