DOING GOOD - HOW DIFFICULT IT IS?
Doing
Good -How difficult it is?
A group of experts were entrusted
with a task of studying an
agro based industry in cooperative sector & recommend the strategies in the
interest of industry and farmers. One of
member who is good at out of box thinking, could smell some rot and gone deep
into the system and found that the catch is not rat & its blood tasted lion
and the nefarious activity is goes on for over 3 years.
The modus operandi is shared with the decision makers. They being
sincere and straightforward, the huge drain to
exchequer is put to control. As one of the members of the committee has strong
links with vested interest group, he was unhappy and put pressure on the
particular member & the group and even tried to make the committee dysfunctional.
The members resisted the action, as they
felt the positive impact and
effectiveness of the committee. The
result of doing good is strains in friendship of over 30 years. One can imagine, how painful it is? The entire
system which was getting a cut, was
after the blood of the member & he was threatened and even tried to create
bad image of him in society. Imagine what type mental agony he was put to, for
doing something good. They did not spare the sincere officers also.
For couple of months, a very open and transparent system was
put in place. The vested interest group
could not digest the fact, and back into action again. They could influence an
important link in decision making and the system was instructed to switch from
new transparent system to old system.. As there are some good and honest people
in system, the same was again brought to the notice of highest decision making
authority and could stop it
successfully. But there are some
causalities in bargain i.e., diluted powers to honest officers, as reward for
being sincere.
The sincere officers wanted to
find a solution, which will safeguard cooperatives from market forces, so that
farmers will be covered under safety net
and indirectly reduce burden on state.
To that affect file was moved and the vested interest group could stall
it successfully. None of the people who claim as champions of farmers could
resist the move. Even the senior most officers working in cooperatives also
shown interest as their palms were greased. Surprisingly when the vested interest group
was in command everyone was cooperating
with it may be out of fear or free meat cut. As the sourcing of produce was made very
transparent, the vested interest group was out of place and certain
cooperatives could enter. Again they were not happy & used their contacts
in supply chain and also decision makers and got the cooperative blacklisted.
Incidentally the vested interest group was sourcing the same produce from
cooperative & supplying for years. There were no quality checks or no
complaints at that time. When farmers cooperatives get into business directly
by eliminating the middleman, so many hurdles. How the farmer will survive? No
wonder there are many farmer suicides.
When the whole process was
documented & put to action by questioning
the authorities, again so many threats, social pressures, insults etc.
If such is the situation everywhere, how will someone think about doing good.
With judiciary intervention the cooperative could get the ban lifted. They denied to implement the court order, quoting
the reason that order is not received officially. Again the serves of the
genuine officers had to be accessed to get the issue resolved in favor of
farmers.
NOW
THINK FOR YOURSELF. DOING GOOD, IS IT EASY? HOW WILL PEOPLE COME FORWARD TO DO
GOOD AT THE RISK OF THEIR LIVES.
