Welcoming the transport bill amendment act 2016.
The increase in fatal road accidents is real concern and concrete steps to minimise them are required. Hopefully the new act is a step towards the same.
In last 10 years our road conditions improved and the public particularly the rural population are not educated towards usage of improved roads. Still we find on national highways - grazing of cattle in road dividers, margins, people crossing roads on slow phase, tractors crossing the road across the divider etc. These are main reasons for fatal accidents other than drunken driving, over speed etc.
The new act is limited to the extent of increased fines etc and it serves limited purpose only. Series of steps like complete ban on liquor shops on highways, educating public on road safety, web based monitoring of persons related to road safety and maintenance etc needs immediate attention of policy makers.
Strict monitoring of traffic police, transport Dept and other related staff with stringent punishments of guilty along with implementation of new act is essential to bring in some quality change. Otherwise the new act will turn out to be golden goose for them in terms of increased collections for letting out the culprits.
We have seen what happened in the recent case of a celebrity. Hope the civic society learn lessons and play the role of watchdogs effectively.
